genus: HETEROCLITA Burmeister, 1842 species: haworth (Gory et Percheron, 1833) origin: South Africa, Eastern Cape wild imago size: 12-15 mm remark: Rather scarce species, not commonly collected. Two fully grown larvae were found in rotten wood ,however only one was successfully reared to adulthood. Larva pupated after unusually long time (nine months) in captivity, pupal phase took approximately three months. Larvae showed slow growth rates which may indicate intermittent feeding as observed in Ichnestoma spp. The imago died several days after emerging and was observed neither flying nor feeding on fruit. Heteroclita haworth + wild habitat of its larvae (Winterberge Mt.) genus: RHINOCOETA Burmeister, 1842 species: sanguinipes (Gory et Percheron, 1833) origin: South Africa, Eastern Cape wild imago size: 20-23 mm remark: An interesting chafer most commonly found in dung heaps on top of hills and also in Aardvark (Orycteropus afer) middens. Two adult beetles were found under dry goat dung. Rhinocoeta sanguinipes + wild habitat (Winterberge Mt.) Rhinocoeta sanguinipes, as found in the dung midden of small antelope 1st page 2nd page |
