genus: DYSPILOPHORA Kraatz 1880
species: trivittata Schaum 1841
origin: Malawi, Dedza ;leg. Petr Malec (3-4/2000)
origin2: Zambia, Mufumbwe ;leg. Petr Malec (2/2005)
wild imago size: 16-17mm
sexual dimorphism: males with abdominal groove on sternits
genus: POECILOPHILA Kolbe 1893
species: maculatissima Boheman 1860
origin: Malawi, Dedza ;leg. Petr Malec (3-4/2000); det.Milan Krajčík
wild imago size: up to 20 mm
sexual dimorphism: difficult to identify, abdominal groove present at both sexes, good feature seems to be pygidium - females have it more oval and gibbous. Also adult males rather gracile in comparison with females.
note:
Both species belong to long living beetles, Dyspilophora imago may live up to 8 months in captivity, Poecilophila often more than 1 year. Life cycle is very short, circa 2-3 month, in natural conditions probably even shorter. The main breeding problem is definitely the oviposition as is quite complicated to prepare the right clima for adults to lay eggs. If happen so, it is usually at the end of their life.
